From Billet to T-Slot: The Aluminium Extrusion Process Behind Our Profiles
If you’ve ever assembled a frame, workbench, or machine housing using AluxProfile T-slot aluminium profiles, you know how versatile and strong they are. But have you ever wondered how these sleek extrusions are made? In this post, we’ll take you behind the scenes — from raw billet to finished T-slot profile — and show why extrusion is the perfect process for modular framing systems.
Why Aluminium Extrusion?
Extrusion is the process of forcing heated aluminium through a hardened steel die to create a constant cross-section. For T-slot systems, that means we can achieve:
-
Precision slots that accept nuts, bolts, and connectors
-
Lightweight but strong designs thanks to alloy selection and hollow geometries
-
Consistent cross-sections over long lengths, ideal for modular assembly
Step-by-Step: The Extrusion Journey

1. Billet Preparation
Aluminium ingots are cast into cylindrical billets. These are homogenized to ensure uniform material properties before extrusion.
2. Heating
Billets are preheated to around 450 °C, making them malleable but not molten.
3. Extrusion
The heated billet is pressed through a custom-made die shaped to produce our T-slot profiles. Think of it like squeezing toothpaste — but with tonnes of pressure and extreme precision.

4. Cooling & Quenching
The profile exits the die glowing hot. Fans or water jets cool it rapidly to “freeze” the alloy’s properties.
5. Stretching & Cutting
To remove any twists or bends, the extruded profile is stretched, straightened, and then sawn to customer-specific lengths.
6. Finishing
We apply anodising or other finishes to improve corrosion resistance and aesthetics. Profiles are also machined (e.g. drilled, tapped) to order.
Special Care for T-Slot Profiles
Because T-slots are all about fit and functionality, we focus on:
-
Dimensional accuracy: tight tolerances ensure nuts and connectors slide perfectly
-
Uniform anodising: even inside the slots
-
Surface quality: smooth finish for both looks and ease of assembly

From Billet to Finished Frame
Thanks to extrusion, we can create long, precise, and durable aluminium profiles — the backbone of your projects. Every T-slot profile you buy from AluxProfile carries the hidden story of metallurgy, precision tooling, and quality control.
